Sequoyah Book Program

 

The Sequoyah Book Awards program is presented by the Oklahoma Library Association. It is in honor of the Native American leader Sequoyah who created the Cherokee syllabary. The program encourages the students of Oklahoma to read books of literary quality by providing them the opportunity to vote for their favorite book from the nominated lists. The Sequoyah Reading Teams release masterlists of nominated books in the spring for schools and libraries to promote. There are four masterlists: Children's, Young Adult, Intermediate, and High School.

Students in grades 3rd through 6th are eligible to vote for the Children's Sequoyah Book Award if they have read or listened to at least three selections from the Children's Masterlist. Students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite title in March. Winners are announced in April, and awards are presented to the authors at the Oklahoma Library Association's annual conference the following spring.

Here at Kingsgate Elementary, we have an extra incentive to the Sequoyah Reading Program. If students read at least 5 of this year's Sequoyah nominated titles, they will be invited to attend a Sequoyah Party that is held at the Kingsgate Library Media Center in the Spring. 

Students in grades 3 through 5 must read or listen to 3 or more titles to vote.
